It’s almost that time of the year where love is in the air! Valentine’s Day. Tuesday, February 14, 2017! It’s the day when most people say “I love you” with a box of chocolate treats. Speaking of chocolate…Did you know that the more processed the chocolate, the less health benefits it has? On the other hand, the right kind of chocolate could be good for you! I did some research and found out some wonderful things about the world’s most famous sweet, most popular especially during this time of the year.
Below are some wonderful things I found in my search about the health benefits of cacao. I hope that you find the facts as interesting as I did and try to make informed decisions regarding healthier food choices as you do your meal planning. I discovered that with non-processed cacao, you don’t need much sweetener to make it taste good. This is my “no guilt” way of drinking it: The natural goodness of cacao + homemade almond milk sweetened with a few dates, some cinnamon and vanilla extract + a few drops of honey is all you need to create a wonderful drink for you and your family on those cold winter days, not to mention to sip on before bedtime. No need to feel bad about this healthy comfort food when prepared the right way!

Research shows that the flavanols (flavan-3-ol) antioxidants found in natural cacao has cardiovascular health benefits. However, research also shows that when cacao is processed with alkali (a Dutch chemical process that reduces the acidity), the flavanols are significantly reduced. Cacao is considered an acid forming food which means that even though it’s good for you, you have to use it in moderation, as with all things.
Not only does cocoa improve your cardiovascular system, it also helps reduce weight because it contains MAO inhibitors that decrease your appetite. That’s enough reason right there to drink it! It acts as an appetite suppressant! This really does work.

The polyphenol antioxidants in cacao protects your cells from premature oxidation and can keep you looking younger.
It contains significantly more antioxidants than dark chocolate, blueberries and bananas.
Cacao and processed chocolate are totally different. Processed chocolate is made with cocoa, sugar, milk and other ingredients that we typically eat in a candy bar. So there’s really no health benefit in it when consumed in this fashion.
