How will you do it?
By giving yourself Permission to Win. One of the things that I discovered on my journey of achieving a healthier lifestyle is that I was not accustomed to winning. Whenever I started my weight loss journey, I would eventually sabotage my progress by going back to my old eating habits and subsequently would put the weight back on. Eventually, I would become discouraged and give up. This cycle kept repeating itself and I couldn’t seem to break it. Then one day the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, “You are afraid.” That took me by surprise, but once I dealt with it, I realized that the Holy Spirit was right (of course He was right! He’s always right!) and I took action! Slowly and reluctantly at first, but I did take action, because I needed things to change.
With the help of the Holy Spirit, I took an inventory of my life to figure out why I was afraid to win; why did success frighten me? I discovered that where I grew up and how I grew up was largely responsible for my low self-image. I had allowed people, places, circumstances and lack of worldly possessions to create a low self-image. I had developed the mindset of not expecting to accomplish much, and that was my comfort zone. It was wrong but it was what I was used to. Success felt foreign and it frightened me. Winning frightened me. Through the help of the Holy Spirit and spending quiet time with the Lord and reading the bible, I discovered something: I was ROYALTY, a priest and a chosen generation.
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
1 Peter 2:9
I dealt with the grasshopper mentality (Numbers 13:33) and realized that I needed to give myself permission to win. I allowed the word of God to shape me and then I began to see in me what God saw in me. I accepted His opinion of who I was and realized that it was OK to allow myself to win. I committed myself to the process (I dug in), used the word of God as my arsenal [see the bible verses that moved me forward under Daily Devotions] and began to make the changes. I made small changes that I could maintain and subsequently added more changes, slowly, over a period of time. The end result is that I lost 55 lbs. and reversed a diabetic state. Also, the power that food had over my emotions and the unhealthy eating cycles began to break!
I gave myself permission to win and so will you. I told myself that it was OK to look good, to feel good, and to be who God called me to be: More than a conqueror (Romans 8:37). I had to walk it out in terms of renewing my mind, dealing with my insatiable appetite and choosing better food options. It was not easy. It was not an overnight success but rather a journey that I took, and I allowed the Holy Spirit to lead me. If I can do it with the help of the Holy Spirit, so can you! Every high thing in your life that exalts itself against the word of God shall come down. Every stronghold in your appetite and emotions can be broken.
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5
